Greetings from the AAU Secretariat in Accra, Ghana! I have much pleasure in informing you that I have assumed duty as the new Secretary–General of the AAU as from 1st August 2008. I feel deeply honoured to have been given this opportunity to serve the AAU. Please rest assured that I would do my best to uphold the mission and objectives of our Association. I know I can count on your support in this task.


One of my immediate priorities is the organisation of the AAU’s 12th General Conference that will be held in Abuja, Nigeria on 4 - 9 May 2009. A first announcement of this Conference already appears on AAU’s website (http://www.aau.org). The Universities of Abuja and Illorin will host the Conference and the theme of the scientific component of the Conference is: Sustainable Development in Africa: The Role of Higher Education.

A second important component of the General Conference will be the business session where the new leadership of the Association (the President, 3 Vice-Presidents and 11 members of the Executive Board) will be elected. In that connection, may I draw your attention to Article X of the revised AAU Constitution, as well as to Bye-Law 7. Please note that the full Constitution and Bye-Laws can be found on AAU’s website.

In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, I am calling for nominations for the positions of President and three (3) Vice-Presidents of the Executive Board, which will become vacant in May 2009. Nominations must be received by 20 April 2009, at the latest.

Please note that only serving Executive Heads of full members of the Association in good standing, and physically present at the General Conference, are eligible for election as President or Vice-President.
